Death vs. the Good Fat

Dear Origins,

Assassin -- Though the etymology is disputed the general consensus is that this word is derived from a secret Muslim sect, the Hashashim, who were active in the 9th and 10th centuries. The group opposed the Crusades and consequently killed Christians in support of their own political and religious views. While Marco Polo describes a drug whose effects are similar to alcohol, any consumption of the aforementioned liquid is forbidden under the Muslim faith, and thus it is highly probable that substance was indeed hash. The men who became known as assassins, smoked hash before going on kill missions in order to either calm themselves or boost their courage for the task which lay ahead.

Avocado -- this green fruit originated in Mexico in about 6000 B.C. However, it wasn't until several thousand years later that it was actually cultivated in an agricultural manner. The pear-shaped lump of goodness was called "ahucatl" after the Aztec word for testicle, most likely due to its close resemblance to a man ball, but also because it was thought to be an aphrodisiac. To the Spanish ears, "ahucatl" sounded phonetically similar to "avocate" which eventually caught on and is translated into Enlgish as "avocado". These fruits are also known as "avocado pears" or "alligator pears" because of their shape, and the texture and colour of the skin.

In other news, my cankles have disappeared and I can once again see the bones in my ankle.
